Keys to the Kingdom (Week 8)
In our series Keys to the Kingdom: The Secret Language of the Parables, we’re exploring Jesus’s teachings—hidden in story form—found in the gospel according to Mark.
Icebreaker: Have you ever gotten so focused on something (a project, a conversation, driving, etc.) that you realized you had been operating on "autopilot"? What helped you become aware again?
Read Mark 13:33-37.
1. Jesus repeatedly tells His disciples to "watch." How is biblical watchfulness different from trying to predict the future or interpret current events? What do you think Jesus was really calling His followers to do?
2. In her sermon, Jessica emphasized that Jesus gave each servant an assigned task, not a timeline for the end of the world. Why do you think we're often more interested in knowing when Jesus will return than in faithfully doing what He has entrusted to us today? How can we resist that temptation?
3. Jessica described spiritual drift as something that often feels normal and happens gradually through distraction, comfort, or busyness. What are some of the subtle ways spiritual drift can happen in your life? What practices help you stay attentive to God's presence?
4. God is already at work in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and relationships. Where do you see signs that God is at work in your everyday life or community? How might He be inviting you to join Him there this week?
5. Jessica says that "watchfulness isn't living on edge; it's living in awe." What does it look like to live with hope and expectancy rather than fear or anxiety? How does confidence in Jesus' reign change the way we approach ordinary responsibilities?
6. Jessica ended by pointing to the disciples' failure in Gethsemane and Jesus' faithfulness despite their weakness. How does knowing that Jesus calls us back with grace—not shame—encourage you when you've become distracted or spiritually "asleep"? What is one practical way you can respond to His invitation to "watch" this week?
