Marvels: Healing of the Man by the Pool

Welcome to our new series Marvels: Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This week Jessica and Pete discuss the healing of the man by the pool at Bethesda in John 5.

Read the passage in John 5:1-15 before you begin.

  1. In the podcast, Pete and Jessica point out that this is the first of the miracles in John that Jesus actually seeks out. What does it say about Jesus that he chooses a man who doesn’t have any apparent faith in him?

  2. Take a closer look at verses 5-7. What do you make of the fact that the man had been waiting at the pool for such a long time?

  3. How do you think he received Jesus’s question: “Do you want to get well?”

  4. Does that question resonate with you? How would you answer it if Jesus was asking you? Discuss.

  5. What rationalizations or excuses may be keeping you from receiving whatever God wants to do for, in, or through you?

  6. Read verses 8-9. Where in your life is God inviting you to “pick up your mat and walk”?

  7. Read verses 9-12. In the podcast and sermon, Pete noted that Jesus is challenging the Jewish leaders’ certainty on the topic of healing on the Sabbath.

How is God leading you to embrace a posture of curiosity over certainty in your life? Can you discuss a specific example?
