Marvels: The Raising of Lazarus

Welcome to our series Marvels: Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This week, we conclude our series with the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11.

  1. What has been the most impactful sign or marvel of Jesus for you that we’ve studied during this series?

  2. In the podcast and sermon, Jarm suggested that everyone take some time to fill in the blank in the following sentence, taken from John 11:3. Take a moment to think about your answer, and share it with the members of your group:

Lord, the one you love is __________________.

  3. Read John 11:1-6. How would you have felt if you were Martha and Mary, to know that Jesus intentionally waited two days before coming to Lazarus, who was on his deathbed?

  4. Is there a situation you are in, or have been in, where it feels like God isn’t there when you think you need Him? What is this like?

  5. Read John 11:17-27. Why do you think Mary, who loved and was loved by Jesus, did not go to meet him?

  6. In his sermon, Jarm referred to the conversation between Martha and Jesus in this passage, saying: “Resurrection is a person that happens to people.” Unpack this statement in your group. What difference does it make that Jesus is a person, not just a theological concept?

  7. Read John 11:33 and 11:38. What does it mean to you that Jesus is “deeply moved”? What does this say about the amount of care the God of the Universe has for His people?

  8. To close, read the final verses of this passage, verses 38-44. As you read, try to imagine yourself seeing these events unfold before your eyes. What final thoughts do you have about this miraculous sign?
