Normal People (Week 3)

In our series Normal People: Living an Ordinary Life with Extraordinary Grace, we’ll look at Paul’s words to the Thessalonians and receive the encouragement we need to embrace the normalcy of our lives, allowing the grace of God to do the extraordinary.

1. In this week’s podcast, Brenna talks about finding God in her work. What are some of the “mundane” areas of your life where you have experienced God?

2. In the podcast, Nick and Shawn mention that the early church in Thessalonica was a lot like a community group. Have you ever thought that what you’re doing right now is likely very similar to these churches Paul established? What is that realization like?

Read 1 Thessalonians 2:17-20

3. Based on this passage, what kind of connection does Paul have with the people of Thessalonica? How do you think this connection was formed?

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

4. Here, Paul expresses his worries that the Thessalonians would experience trials and persecution. What trials have you faced? Are there potential trials that make you worried for those whom you love?

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:6-9

5. What strikes you about the encouragement Paul expresses here?

6. In the podcast, Mackenzie describes how a roommate encouraged her faith, and other friends led her to the Young Adults group at St. Mark’s. Talk about any similar experiences you may have—how has the encouragement of friends, family, or even co-workers impacted your faith?

7. To close, discuss the questions Nick posed in the podcast: What brought you to the group you’re in right now? How has being in community with other believers strengthened your faith?
