The King Beneath the Tangled Crown (Part 7: King)

Shepherd. Outcast. Poet. Giant-killer. Warrior. Fugitive. King. Sinner. Man after God’s own heart. Welcome to our new series, an in-depth exploration of the life—and many hats—of David.

Warmup: Is there a difference between belief and faith? Discuss.

1. In this week’s sermon and podcast, Pete said that faithfulness is “living your life in such a way that you will fail if God does not show up.”

2. What are your thoughts on this idea? Think about a time when your life has depended on God showing up. What was that like?

3. Episcopal priest (and recovering alcoholic) Jon Z. says that “God’s office is located at the end of your rope.” How can desperation lead to increased faith-full-ness?

4. How do you think time spent “alone with God”—in prayer, or through reading scripture—helps to form our faithfulness?

5. In the podcast, Pete and Jessica discuss the messiness of biblical characters like David, Paul, and the disciples. Why do you think we have such a hard time seeing the value in those who have fallen short when we see it throughout scripture? How do we sit in the tension we find here?

6. What does it say about God’s faithfullness that He chooses flawed people to build His kingdom?

7. How can we learn to see the human heart—ours and others—from God’s eyes and not our own?
