The Voice, part 4— “I Am with You”

Welcome to the conclusion of our series, The Voice: Listening for God in the Day to Day. This week, Jessica Flake focuses on Moses’ wilderness encounter with God.

1.In this week’s podcast, Jessica and Megan discuss their difficulty with finding the balance between depending on God and “getting things done” in their own power. Do you struggle with this as well? Discuss.

2. In the podcast discussion, Jessica and Megan suggest some practices that can help reorient us to God, such as silence, play, and being in nature. What are some practices that you feel bring your attention to God’s voice?

Read Exodus 3:1-4.

3. When Moses saw the burning bush, he stopped in his tracks. Only then did he hear God speaking to him. Why do you think we often have such a hard time “stopping” long enough to hear God?

4. Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness as a shepherd before this encounter. Surely this was a boring occupation, by our standards today anyway. How often do we reach for our phones when we’re bored? How do you think the myriads of distractions today keep us from listening to God?

Read Exodus 3:7-12.

5. Have you ever felt, like Moses, not qualified to do what God is asking of you? Talk about this with your group.

6. Discuss this quote: “God does not always call the equipped, but He does equip those He has called.”

7. In verse 12, God tells Moses that He will be with him. Talk about the impact this reassurance makes for Moses. How about for you, personally, in whatever God has called you into?
