Marvels: The Wedding at Cana
Welcome to our new series Marvels: Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This week Pete and Nick took a longer look at one of Jesus’ most famous miracles.
1. Why do you think Jesus chose a wedding — something so ordinary— as the setting for his first miracle? What does that say about God’s heart toward celebration or even our everyday lives?
2. How does the “trivial”nature of this miracle demonstrate God’s compassion and empathy for us in every aspect of our lives? Talk about a time when you have experienced God’s compassion.
3. Mary tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” What does that kind of trust look like in your own life right now? What’s your “fill the jars with water” moment?
4. Jesus didn’t just make a little wine — he made 120–180 gallons. Why do you think he went so big? What does this say about God’s character when it comes to provision, abundance, or joy?
5. The miracle happened behind the scenes — only a few people even knew it happened. Have you ever seen God work in a “hidden” way in your life or someone else’s? How does that shape your faith?
6. The signs and wonders of Jesus in John’s gospel are not meant to be about the miracles themselves. In fact, John doesn’t call them miracles like the other gospels do—so that we do not let the miracles overshadow the Messiah. What is the difference between focusing on the miracles versus focusing on the Messiah?
