Marvels: Feeding of the 5000

Welcome to our new series Marvels: Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This week Jessica and Gordon discuss the feeding of the 5,000 as recorded in John 6.

  1. What useful or preconceived ideas have you had about who Jesus is? For example, he offers blessings and prosperity. You can be specific.

    Read John 6:1-15.

  2. Even though Phillip had seen miracles Jesus had performed prior to this miracle, why do you think he responded to Jesus’ question the way he did?

  3. Read Mark 6:30-44 and refresh reading John 6:1-15. What are the similarities and what are some things that are unique to each passage? Why do you think John included the conversation between Jesus and Phillip in John’s book?

  4. Do you feel it is hard or easy to be willing to leave the crowd to follow Jesus today? Why or why not?

  5. In this week’s sermon, Gordon quoted Scott McKnight’s words:

“Jesus calls people to look at him, to listen to him, to watch him, and to trust Who he is. The only way to comprehend Jesus in love is to surrender to him, and so discover who he is.”

What areas in your life do you find challenging to surrender to God? Why?

  6. Do you feel that God is enough – that He is all you need? Why or why not?

  7. What do you feel Jesus is inviting you into?

  8. Ponder this question: If I was in the multitude of people listening to Jesus that day, would I have still yelled “Crucify him!” with the crowd?
