Marvels: Walking on Water
Welcome to our series Marvels: Miracles of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This week Jessica and Pete discuss Jesus walking on water in John 6:16-21.
Have you ever been in a storm (a literal or figurative storm) that frightened you? Share that experience with your group.
Read the passage found in John 6:16-21.
Have you ever paid attention to the fact that Jesus walks on the water only in front of the disciples, not the crowds? What do you make of this?
Read verses 16-19 again.
Why do you think Jesus sent the disciples off in the boat without him?
What do you make of the fact that the disciples are not afraid of this intense storm, but Jesus approaching them on the water? Can you relate to this experience at all?
Notice that in this account of Jesus walking on the water, Peter is not included. Why do you think this is the case?
Read verses 20-21.
Discuss the impact of Jesus’s words: “It is I (or, I AM), do not be afraid” on the disciples. Can you hear Jesus speaking these words to you?
In the primer podcast, Pete talks about the impact of Jesus’s presence alone as opposed to the effort and expertise of the disciples in the middle of the storm. Discuss what difference this makes.
What can you take away from this passage right now? How do you sense God speaking into your specific life situation or your specific storms?
