Storytellers (Week 2)

We are kicking off our summer Storytellers series. This week, we’re excited to host Heather Thompson Day, speaker and bestselling author of What If I’m Wrong?, among many other books. Visit her website here

  1. What does the term “upside-down kingdom” mean to you? What kind of implications does the Upside-Down Kingdom of God have on your life?

  2. Why do you think God often chooses people who seem “unlikely” to fulfill His purposes (e.g., Moses, David, Mary, the disciples)?

  3. Have you ever felt disqualified, overlooked, or “not enough” in some area? What do you hear God, speaking through scripture, saying about this?

  4. Can you think of someone in your life (or in history) whom God used powerfully despite being dismissed by the world?

  5. What step of obedience might God be calling you to take—even if you feel unqualified?

  6. Discuss the following quote by pastor and author Rich Villodas from Heather’s message:

“In his gospel, Luke lists all the political and religious leaders in power and then notes how the word of God bypassed them and came to John in the wilderness. The locus of God’s presence and activity is not found in the corridors of great power.”

Have you noticed this theme when reading Luke? What does this tell us about the importance of worldly power?

  7. In her message, Heather said that “God often shows up in Scripture in impossible, unlikely, improbable situations.”

What is something in your life that you have been praying for, that feels impossible, improbable, and unlikely? How can you approach that prayer with hope this week?
