Winning the War In Your Mind: Replace
This series — built on Craig Groeschel’s book of the same title — will give practical tools for using scriptural truth to combat the negative thought patterns in your mind.
1. Nathan and Pete talked about the feeling that, in public, we need to at least make it seem like we have it all together. Is this something you relate to? Talk about how this has played out in your life.
2. Why do you think talking about these things helps overcome the shame we may feel about not having everything together?
3. If you are a parent, talk in your group about some of the challenges you have faced.
How does shame play a part in negative self-talk regarding our parenting?
Why is the topic of parenting such fertile ground for this “war” in our minds?
4. What are some ways you have found success combating such negative self-talk?
5. In the podcast, Nathan read the following quote from Richard Rohr:
“You do not climb up to your true self, you fall into it. It is given...it is a pure gift, and you only discover it by the trials and testing of life, by the mistakes you make…and by the suffering that comes to you.”
How do you see this truth reflected in the pages of scripture, through the imperfect lives of the men and women we read about in the Bible?
6. Read Psalm 139:13-18.
How can you give yourself the grace to truly believe that you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God?
7. Are you able to believe that God views you not only as acceptable, but as wonderfully made? Talk about how this belief might help you replace some of your negative thought patterns and shame.
