“Be”: Psalm 57 (February 1)

This week, we pause our “Tangled Crown” series due to winter weather to reflect on Psalm 57, another psalm of David.

“Icebreaker”: How did you prepare for this weekend’s snowstorm? Did you prepare enough, or were you underprepared?

1.Pete tells us that David wrote Psalm 57 when David was surrounded by enemies in En Gedi. Read Psalm 57:7-11. How do you think David was able to praise God in this way, in this situation?

2. Have you ever felt “surrounded” in some way like this? If you feel comfortable doing so, discuss this situation. How did God make Himself known to you in this situation?

3. Read the whole of Psalm 57, calling into mind the protection God provided to David at En Gedi. Instead of launching a plan to attack his enemies or escape, David praises God. What would it look like for you to praise God when you are under siege?

4. What is the hardest part about fully relying on God, instead of attempting to seize control of your situation?

5. Read Matthew 6:25-34. How do Jesus’s words here reframe those things we spend time and energy worrying about?

6. Take a few minutes to reflect on the video of the eagle’s nest near the end of Pete’s sermon. How is God like the eagle, and how are you like the egg, in the midst of the storm?
