The King Beneath the Tangled Crown (Part 4: Giant-Slayer)
Shepherd. Outcast. Poet. Giant-killer. Warrior. Fugitive. King. Sinner. Man after God’s own heart. Welcome to our new series, an in-depth exploration of the life—and many hats—of David.
Icebreaker: Talk about your first memories or interaction with the story of David and Goliath? Was it in Sunday school, Veggie Tales, or somewhere else?
Read 1 Samuel 17:4-11.
1. Goliath is the “champion” of the Philistine army, chosen to fight on behalf of his people. Who was supposed to be the champion of Israel here?
2. Why is this champion scared to fight Goliath?
Read 1 Samuel 17:32-40.
3. In the podcast and sermon, Pete states that it’s Goliath, not David, who is the true underdog in this story. How has this added to or changed your previous perception of this famous story?
4. What exactly is it that makes David the unexpected favorite in this battle? What can we take away from this?
5. In your life, what battles could you not have won without the presence of God with you?
6. Take some time to answer this question that Pete asks in the podcast: Where are you making your battles bigger than they really are because you’ve put your faith in a “champion” rather than God?
